Vocal Competition

The vocal competition is open to soloists.

​

Each contestant is asked to perform three (3) art songs and either one (1) opera aria or one (1) oratorio aria.  Pieces should demonstrate contrasting styles and represent at least 3 languages, one of which is English, with a total performance time not to exceed 15 minutes.

Please provide your own accompanist or you may perform with a piano-only accompaniment track.  You may download a list of local Southern Illinois accompanists from the link above.

Submission Deadline:  April 15, 2023

Judging will be completed and results published Saturday April 22, 2023.

Rules
  1. Competitors must be between the ages of twenty and thirty years old on the date of the competition.

  2. All applications require a non-refundable application fee, which must be received at the time of registration

  3. A competitor may change their music program, as long as it stays within all other rules and is completed two weeks prior to the competition.

  4. Vocalists will perform 3 art songs and either 1 opera aria or 1 oratorio aria. Pieces should demonstrate contrasting styles and represent at least 3 languages, one of which is English.

  5. We attempt to make it such that contestants will be only known to the judges only by their contestant number.  No personal or biographical information may be given to the judges.

  6. Contestants should upload a copy of their music when you submit your entry to the competition. The music should have the measures clearly marked and have all other notations and comments removed. All uploaded copies will be deleted after the competition.

  7. Contestants may perform with a live pianist or a piano – only background track.

 

Video Recording Instructions

Competitors should record their video in the spirit of a live performance. They may record their repertoire in any location with good natural acoustics, home, church, school, rehearsal room, recital hall etc.  Competitors should dress professionally, as they would for a recital or a live audition.

  • Record a separate unedited video for each of your musical selections.

  • Introduce each selection at the beginning of the video. “I will perform – Title of Composition – by – Composer – and if appropriate – from – Title of Work”. The identity of your teacher, school and region should NOT be given.

  • Your camera should record you or your ensemble from a fixed position.

  • Face forward to the camera as you would appear before adjudicators in a live audition.

  • Your video recordings should clearly show your face and most of your upper body.

  • Video recordings of solo pianists and organists should clearly show a side view of face hands and feet.

  • Videos must be recorded within 6 months of the competition date.
